No block-printer learns the work from a manual. They learn by standing beside someone who already knows how hard to press, how wet the dye should be, and exactly where the next block has to land.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.7; color: #5a534a; margin: 0 0 12px;\"\u003eThat last part is the whole craft. A pattern is built by pressing a carved wooden block again and again across a length of cloth, lining each impression up against the last by eye. Get it right and the repeat reads continuous. Get it fractionally wrong and you see a faint doubling at the seam, which is how you tell a hand-printed cloth from a machine-printed one at a glance. The doubling is not the mistake.
