How to Pack a Dyson Airwrap for Travel, and What Fits in a Hair Tool Bag

A multi-styler is one of the more expensive things most people put in a suitcase, and one of the worst-shaped. It is long and narrow, its cable has a fixed end that takes all the strain, and its attachments are small, hollow and easy to crush or lose. A rigid case protects it but takes up the same space whether it is full or not. Packed loose, it ends up wedged diagonally across the clothes with the cable wound around anything nearby.

This guide covers how to pack a Dyson Airwrap, or any styler with attachments, so it arrives working and everything in the kit arrives with it. It also records what actually fits in our quilted hair tool bag, because we tested it rather than estimating.

What we tested, and what we did not

We packed a Dyson Airwrap Complete Long into one of our quilted hair tool bags. With the attachments taken off the styler and packed beside it, the styler, all its attachments, the cable and a makeup kit went in together, and the zip closed without force.

We have also packed a hair straightener in it, and it fits. We have not tried the shorter Airwrap versions, other Dyson stylers, or other brands' multi-stylers. A shorter styler will almost certainly fit, but "almost certainly" is not a measurement, so check the length of yours against the product page before ordering. How to pack a styler, step by step

1. Let it cool completely. The barrel and attachments hold heat for longer than they seem to. Pack the night before you leave, or at least half an hour after the last use. Our bag is quilted cotton and is not heat-resistant, and nor is most of what sits around it in a suitcase.
2. Take every attachment off. An attachment left on the styler turns the whole tool into a lever. If the bag is pressed from above, the joint takes the force. Packed separately, each piece only has to bear its own weight.
3. Clean it first. If your styler has a filter, clear it, and pull any hair from the attachments. Hair and dust packed in stay in. It takes two minutes and the tool is ready the moment you arrive.
4. Coil the cable loosely. Fold it into loose loops and secure it with a soft tie or a hair band. Do not wrap it tightly around the handle: the point where the cable meets the body is where cables fail.
5. Give the attachments their own pockets. Our hair tool bag has one horizontal pocket and four small vertical pockets stitched inside. The vertical pockets suit barrels and brushes; the horizontal one suits the cable, clips or a heat-proof mat.
6. Put the styler in last, on top of the cable, not under it. The heaviest part should rest on something soft, not pin something fragile.
7. Place the bag in the middle of the suitcase. Surrounded by clothes, not against the wall of the case where it takes the knocks.

What else fits in the same bag

The reason to carry styler and makeup together is that they are used together, usually in the same twenty minutes before you leave the room. In our test, a makeup kit fitted alongside the full Airwrap set. In practice that means a small base, kajal, a lipstick, brushes and a comb can travel in the same zip bag as the styler, and the whole getting-ready kit comes out of the suitcase in one piece.

Hand luggage or checked bag?

Corded stylers without batteries are generally allowed in both hand and checked luggage on Indian flights. Cordless tools with lithium batteries usually have to travel in hand luggage, and some airlines restrict them further. Rules differ by airline and change over time, so check with yours before flying.

For expensive tools, hand luggage has one practical advantage beyond the rules: checked bags are handled roughly and do sometimes go astray, and a wedding is exactly when you most need the styler to arrive.

What not to do

• Do not pack a styler warm, even in a cotton bag, and never in plastic.
• Do not travel with attachments clipped on.
• Do not wrap the cable tightly around the body of the tool.
• Do not pack liquids loose in the same bag as the styler. A leaking bottle on a motor or a vent is a far bigger problem than a stain on a pouch.

The three prints

Each hair tool bag is ₹1,599, made from a single quilted panel of 100% cotton at 250 GSM with a zip, and each is its own product rather than a colour option:

• Vaan (forest): cockatoos among palm and fern leaves on a cream ground, with green-and-white striped binding.
• Gul (flower): pink and white stripes crossed by leafy sprigs, with pink-striped binding.
• Gulaab (rose): small red floral butis in rows on white, edged in red-and-white stripes.

They are printed, not hand block printed; the texture comes from the quilting. They are handmade in Jaipur by House of Falguni artisans, and each one is inspected at HOF in Ahmedabad before it is dispatched.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Dyson Airwrap fit in the House of Falguni hair tool bag?
The Airwrap Complete Long fits with all its attachments removed and packed alongside, its cable and a makeup kit, with the zip closed. We have not tested other models.

Is the bag heat-resistant?
No. It is quilted cotton. Let the styler cool completely before packing it.

Will it fit a hair straightener or curling tong?
A hair straightener fits, so the bag doubles as a hair straightener pouch. We have not tested curling tongs; most are shorter than an Airwrap, but check the length of yours against the product page first.

Is the styler included?
No. Only the bag is sold. The styler and makeup in photographs are not included.

Can the bag be washed?
Yes. Empty it completely, then hand wash or machine wash in cold water.

Can it be returned?
