A fabric tells you how it was made if you know where to look: the tension in a handloom selvedge, the slight drift of a hand-printed block, the way a natural dye settles unevenly into cotton. Deesha Goswami trained to read cloth that way before she started House of Falguni in Ahmedabad, and it is the lens behind every article published on this site.

Deesha is the founder of House of Falguni, a house of handcrafted clothing, jewellery and home objects named for her mother, Falguni. She writes and edits Stories and Passage, the two journals on this site.

Training

  • Diploma in Textile Manufacturing, R.C. Technical Institute, Ahmedabad
  • Bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering, L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad
  • Master’s in Fashion Management, NIFT Gandhinagar

The first two are about how cloth is made: fibre, yarn, weave, dyeing and finishing. The third is about how it is sold. Most of what she writes sits where those two meet, in the distance between how a textile is made and how it is described.

What she researches, measures and reviews

Making time. The studio records how long each pair of earrings, the neckpiece and each Mashru silk handbag take to finish by hand. There are 32 pieces on that record so far, 82 hours of work in total, from 40 minutes for the simplest fabric drop earrings to five hours for a Mashru handbag. Those figures appear on each product page as the Curator’s Log, and they are the source for every making-time claim in our articles.

How crafts are described for sale. She surveys marketplace listings for a named craft and counts what the listings actually claim against what they cost. Each survey states its date, its sample, its search terms and its limits beside the numbers, because a count taken from listing titles on one day is a snapshot and should be read as one.

What we publish. Articles published under her name are checked against the studio’s own product records for material, construction, making time, care and returns before they go live.

Studies

  • Ajrakh on Amazon India: of 71 distinct listings recorded in September 2026, 6 (8.5%) claimed natural dye, the property that defines the craft. A second sample of 26 listings across 12 sellers put the cross-marketplace median well above Amazon’s.
  • Bandhani on Amazon India: of 103 distinct listings, 51 (50%) used the word “print” in the title, for a craft that is defined by being tied rather than printed. Only 26 claimed hand-tying.
  • Handloom cotton sarees on Amazon India: 35 of 44 listings (80%) used the word handloom or handwoven; none mentioned a Handloom Mark, Silk Mark or GI tag. Median asking price ₹603.
  • Making time across 32 pieces: what the studio’s own record shows about why a jhumka takes four and a half times as long as a fabric drop.

Selected articles

All articles: Stories, on craft, fabric and how to wear and care for what you buy, and Passage, on places, food and the Indian home.

Editorial and corrections policy

Who is responsible. Deesha Goswami is responsible for every article on Stories and Passage. Each carries her name and its publication date.

Where the facts come from. Product facts come from the studio’s own records. Market figures come from surveys we ran ourselves, published with their method and limits. Where we cannot document a claim about dye, fibre, technique or certification, we do not make it.

Commercial interest. House of Falguni sells some of the things these articles discuss, and articles link to those pieces. That is a commercial interest, and we would rather state it here than leave you to guess.

Corrections. If you find an error, email houseoffalguni@gmail.com with the article link and what you believe is wrong. We check it against our records. If it is wrong, we fix the article and add a dated note at the end saying what changed. We do not quietly rewrite a figure.
