Ajrakh is usually described as a print. It is more accurate to call it a grid that has been allowed to flower.
Underneath every Ajrakh cloth is a strict geometric armature: squares, diamonds, eight-pointed stars, trellises that divide the surface before any flower is drawn on it. The botanical motifs arrive afterwards, filling compartments the geometry has already decided. This is why an Ajrakh length can hold a great deal of incident without looking chaotic. The order is established first, and nothing is permitted to break it.
Ruhani means spiritual, or of the soul. The geometry it sits on is the same family of pattern used across Islamic architecture for the same reason: repetition without end, held inside a rule.
What is the Ruhani Mashru silk handbag?
Ruhani is a one-of-one compact rectangular frame clutch in maroon, black and ivory Mashru silk, hand block-printed in the Ajrakh tradition with natural dyes, and made in-house in Ahmedabad. Its body measures approximately 7 × 6 inches and carries ivory-edged diamond medallions on a maroon ground. It has a gold-tone structured frame, a hinged arched top handle, a detachable chain and a faceted flower-shaped clasp. It is ₹2,999, and there is one.
The only rectangle in the edit
Four of the six Mashru pieces are curved or rounded. Ruhani and Aaina are the two rectangles, and Ruhani is the more upright of them: at approximately 7 inches wide by 6 high, it is very nearly square.
Put a grid-based print inside a rectangular frame and the two agree with each other. The diamond medallions meet the straight edges cleanly; the frame reads as a continuation of the pattern's own logic rather than an interruption of it. Set the same print in a curve, as with Rang Mahal, and the arc cuts across the grid, which makes the cloth look like a fragment of a larger field.
Both effects are legitimate. But if what draws you to Ajrakh is its order, the rectangle is the frame that shows it to you.
The narrower width has a practical consequence too. At 7 inches, Ruhani is the least wide of the six. It reads more vertically in the hand and takes up less lateral space at a crowded table, which is a small thing until you are at one.
Maroon is a built colour, not a single dye
The deep maroon here is not one bath. In natural dyeing, this depth generally comes from madder printed over a stronger alum mordant, or from madder meeting traces of iron, which darkens and cools a red towards brown-purple. The ivory edges are cloth that was resisted before any of it, protected with a paste of lime and gum so no colour reached it.
That construction is why a naturally dyed maroon has a different quality from a synthetic one. It is not a flat field; it varies very slightly across the cloth as the mordant took more or less strongly. Held at arm's length it is one colour. Up close it is several.
On who does what: the printing is the work of printers in the Ajrakh tradition, and the cloth arrives at our studio already carrying it. Ours is the bag, roughly five hours of cutting, lining, structuring and setting the frame. We can describe the craft honestly; we cannot certify the recipe for this particular length.
What it holds
Two interior sections: a zip-secured main section with a small internal pouch, and a second section. An iPhone Pro Max fits with cards, a key and a lipstick. The 6-inch height makes it easier to reach into than the 4.5-inch curved pieces, though the 7-inch width means a large phone goes in with less margin either side. If you carry a Pro Max in a thick case, check the measurement before ordering.

What to wear it with
With maroon, oxblood or wine
Tonal dressing, where the ivory edging keeps the bag legible against clothing of a similar depth. The most self-assured of the four options.
With ivory or bone
The ivory in the print connects directly to the outfit, and the maroon becomes the single point of colour. Straightforward and hard to get wrong.
With deep green or indigo
Two deep colours together, which works because neither is trying to be brighter than the other. A good pairing for a winter wedding.
With gold or zari
Maroon and gold is a conventional pairing for good reason. Watch the quantity: with heavy zari in the saree, the gold-tone frame is enough metal on its own, so keep jewellery restrained.
Care
Do not wash, soak or machine clean it. Keep it dry.
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. For a mark, use a professional familiar with silk.
Keep perfume, sanitiser and oil away from the textile.
Store out of prolonged strong sunlight.
Detach the chain before storing so it does not press into the silk.

A frame clutch. A potli is a soft drawstring pouch; Ruhani has a rigid gold-tone frame and holds its shape whether full or empty. Carry it by the arched handle or on the shoulder with the detachable chain.

What is the difference between Ruhani and Aaina?
Both are rectangular and approximately 7 × 6 inches. Ruhani has a maroon ground with ivory-edged diamond medallions; Aaina has an ivory ground with indigo and maroon circles and small florals. Ruhani is the darker, more geometric of the two.
Is this a good bag for a wedding?
