Office Wear Earrings: What Lasts a Nine-Hour Day

An office earring has four jobs before it has to look good: stay light, stay close, stay quiet and stay put. A pair that passes all four lasts a nine-hour day, a headset call and the commute home.

The best office wear earrings are small studs that weigh under about 10 g a pair, sit within an inch of the ear hole, close with a push-back and make no sound. That combination gets through a nine-hour day, a headset, a video call and the commute home. Our lightest pairs, the Mogra kundan studs and the Leher half moons, weigh about 4 g a pair.

Most advice on office earrings stops at "keep it minimal". The more useful question is what the day does to an earring: the 8.40 metro, a two-wheeler helmet, a headset for the eleven o'clock call, a laptop camera at noon, a site visit, a work dinner at seven. Below is the test we use, the numbers for each of our pairs, and when a cheaper pair is the better buy.

The four-part test

Weight: under about 10 g a pair

Nine hours is longer than most wedding functions. There is no official limit for earring weight, so treat this as a working rule: the lighter the pair, the less you notice it at hour seven. Our office pairs run from about 4 g to about 9 g a pair. A 4 g pair is 2 g an earring, about as much as a teaspoon of sugar for the two.

Hang: within an inch of the ear hole

The further an earring hangs, the more it swings, and the more it meets collars, headsets, helmets and bag straps. A stud that sits on the lobe meets none of them. The studs in the table below hang an inch or less; our jhumkas hang 2 inches and our Geometric Ghungroo drops 3.

Sound: none in a quiet room

Ghungroo bells ring a little whenever you turn your head. In an open office the sound is lost; in a quiet meeting room, someone may hear it. Kundan studs and plain fabric pairs make no sound at all.

Closure: a back that stays put

Push-back studs stay where you put them through a commute and a day of phone calls. Hooks can work loose and catch on a dupatta or a bag strap. All the studs below close with a push-back or a butterfly back; our jhumkas and a few of our drop earrings use a hook.

Our office shortlist, measured

Pair Weight a pair Hangs below the ear hole Closure Price
Mogra kundan studs, 8 colours in 3 shapes About 4 g Sits on the lobe, 0.9 in Push-back ₹999
Leher half moon studs, 3 colours About 4 g 1 in Butterfly back ₹999
Ghungroo Studs, 6 colours About 8 g 0.7 in Push-back ₹1,499
Floral Kundan studs, 7 colours About 9 g 0.8 in Push-back ₹1,499
Riwaayat triangles, 8 prints Not yet weighed 1 in tall Push-back ₹999

Keep these for after six: the fabric jhumkas (about 8 g, 2 inches, on a hook), the chandbalis (about 12 g, 1.5 inches), the Geometric Ghungroo drops (about 8 g, 3 inches) and the tassels (about 7 g, 3.7 inches). None is heavy, but each one swings.

Headsets, phones and video calls

Over-ear headphones press their cushions over the whole ear, so anything with depth is pushed into the lobe for the length of the call. On a headset day, wear the smallest, flattest stud you own. The Mogra studs are 0.9 inch at their longest and sit on the lobe, while our 1.5-inch Ghungroo Studs sit wider than most lobes, so a cushion rests on their bells. A phone held to the ear clicks against anything that hangs.

On a video call the frame usually stops at your shoulders, so your earrings are one of the few things anyone sees. A small, clear colour reads well on a laptop camera, and a stud stays still while you talk. If you wear glasses on screen days, our guide to earrings with glasses covers frames and studs together.

The commute

A two-wheeler helmet slides down over both ears, and a drop earring comes out of it bent or caught; a stud does not. On a crowded metro or bus, hooks and fringes catch on bags and dupattas, and a backpack strap does not get along with a tassel. If your commute involves any of these, the stud is your office earring.

Matching the office

  • Client-facing or formal: one small stud in a deep colour. The Mogra Royal Blue Round or Red Oval studs read polished against a white shirt or a cream kurta.
  • Business casual: colour is allowed. The Mogra Lime Green against the Ibrik camel shirt dress is one bright note on a quiet base, and the Firozi Pentagon brings a pointed, modern shape.
  • Kurti offices and creative teams: pattern, and a little sound if your room allows it. The Charcoal Ghungroo Studs are the neutral pair, the Leher Sky Blue half moons among the lightest. Our guide to earrings for a kurti matches the pair to the neckline.
  • Celebration days at work: the Floral Kundan studs, 1.4 inches across with kundan petals around a fabric centre, carry an office lunch or a team party without a change.

From desk to dinner

If the evening needs more, carry a second pair rather than wearing the evening pair all day. A fabric jhumka weighs about 8 g and fits in a coin pouch, so swap at six. Our office to festive guide builds the rest of that kit, and our guide to styling a kurti for the office covers the outfit.

Is a ₹999 stud worth it for the office?

Not always. Plain office studs on the marketplaces sell for roughly ₹120 to ₹300, and if you want a metal stud you will not mind losing on the metro, that is the sensible buy. We would rather say so. What the extra money buys here is colour and handwork: each Mogra pair is a fabric centre set with three kundan stones and a ring of smaller kundan, made by one curator in our Ahmedabad studio in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Mogra means jasmine, and the three stones sit like a sprig of its buds. Our kundan stud earrings come in round, oval and pentagon shapes, each colour on its own page.

What these earrings are bad at

Fabric and rain do not mix, so keep a pouch in your bag for the monsoon commute, and never wash fabric pairs. Put perfume on before the earrings, not after. The kundan settings are gold-tone, not gold, so humidity can dull them over time; our guide to keeping gold-tone jewellery from tarnishing explains how to slow that down. The posts are base metal and we make no nickel-free claim, so if fashion jewellery irritates your ears, test a pair on a weekend before a full working day.

Frequently asked questions

What earrings are best for office wear?

Small studs that weigh under about 10 g a pair, hang less than an inch below the ear hole and close with a push-back. They stay comfortable through a nine-hour day and do not catch on collars, headsets or helmets. Our Mogra kundan studs weigh about 4 g a pair.

What earrings can I wear every day?

The same kind you would wear to the office: a light stud with a push-back. Fabric studs suit daily wear as long as they stay dry, so take them off before rain and never wash them.

Are 8 g earrings heavy?

Not as a stud. A pair of 8 g is 4 g an earring, and when it sits close to the ear, as our Ghungroo Studs do at 0.7 inch, it barely pulls. The same weight in a 3-inch drop feels heavier because it swings.

Can I wear kundan earrings to the office?

Yes, if they are small. A kundan stud under an inch across reads polished rather than festive, especially in one deep colour. Save larger kundan drops and chandbalis for evenings.

Can I wear jhumkas to the office?

On a lighter day, yes. Our fabric jhumkas weigh about 8 g a pair but hang 2 inches on a hook, so they swing and can catch a collar or a headset. For a full day of calls, a stud is easier.

Are ghungroo earrings too noisy for work?

They make a small ring when you move your head. In an open office it is lost in the noise, while in a quiet meeting room someone may hear it. If your day is mostly calls, choose a kundan or plain fabric stud.

Every pair here is made by hand in Ahmedabad, and each product page lists its size, weight and closure. See the full Office to Evening edit, or read earrings for jeans and a top for the weekend version of the same question.
