In the maker's hand

Traditional textile on a contemporary shape. The Fabric Bar Neckpiece hangs a hand-wrapped fabric bar from a silver-tone chain, finished with cowrie shell charms and small bead detailing. Each bar is wrapped by hand in a different printed cloth, so no two pieces carry the same pattern.

The bar is the whole idea. It is close to the least ornamental shape you can hang from a chain, a clean horizontal line, and it is carrying a print that is anything but plain. That tension is why it sits as easily against a cotton kurta as against a linen shirt with the collar open. Light enough to forget you have it on, quiet enough to wear on a Tuesday.

Ten prints, one of each, made by hand in small batches in Ahmedabad.

Care Keep away from water, perfume and humidity. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store flat so the chain does not tangle, away from direct sunlight so the print does not fade.
Good to know Handmade in small batches. The cloth is cut fresh for each bar, so the pattern on your piece will sit differently to the one photographed. That is the point of it rather than a fault in it.
The Story

The cowrie shell had a life as money long before it had one as ornament. For centuries it moved along the Indian Ocean trade routes as currency, light enough to carry by the sackful and near impossible to counterfeit, and it reached deep inland long before minted coin did. It never entirely left. You still find cowries stitched into Banjara mirror-work, knotted into Rajasthani tassels, and worked through the folk jewellery of the north-east.

Block printing has a similar habit of outlasting things. A carved wooden block is used until the pattern wears soft, and then it is recut. The cloth on this bar comes out of that lineage, cut from lengths printed for garments rather than for jewellery, which is why the scale of the pattern reads slightly unexpected once it is shrunk onto a pendant.

Putting the two on one chain is not a reconstruction of anything. Nobody in Kutch was making these. It is two Indian craft traditions asked to share a contemporary shape, and this is what came back. Roughly two hours to a piece, handcrafted in Ahmedabad.

Wear It
Everyday Over a cotton kurta, or a linen shirt with the collar open, where the bar has room to sit flat.
Keep it single Against a plain dress it does the work on its own. Pair it with small studs rather than statement earrings and let the print be the only pattern in the outfit.

Wash & Care
  • First wash cold and separately. Handcrafted colour may release a little in the early washes, then settles.
  • Gentle hand wash, or machine wash cold in a mesh bag on a slow cycle with mild detergent.
  • Do not bleach. Do not wring or soak.
  • Dry in shade, turned inside out, since direct sun fades natural and hand-dyed colour.
  • Iron on medium heat; a quick steam brings back the drape.

Handmade in small batches: a slight unevenness in print or weave is the mark of the hand that made it, not a flaw.
