How it's made

Cloth, cord, clay or stone is chosen by hand for grain, weight and character before work begins.

The piece is cut, shaped or formed by an artisan, working to the exact design by hand.

Detailing, embellishment or finishing work — beading, printing, painting or stitching — is added by hand.

Every piece is checked by hand before it leaves Ahmedabad, so small natural variations are seen, not hidden.

Jaali is the carved lattice that stands in old Indian windows, turning daylight into a scatter of diamonds on the floor. This is that motif redrawn in thread, twice over: two covers, each a field of hand-tufted diamonds raised from ivory cotton, a small tassel weighting every corner. Sixteen inches square and sold only as a set of two, because a sofa is symmetrical and one cushion never quite settles it. Layer them with their knotted sibling, the Chandni Macramé Cushion Cover.

Product Details
Set Two cushion covers — tufted front, plain cotton back (fillers not included)
Size 16 × 16 in (40 × 40 cm) each
Material Hand-tufted cotton in natural ivory
Front Raised diamond jaali tufting with a tassel at each corner, on both covers
Closure Concealed zip along the back of each cover
Care Gentle hand wash cold, dry flat in shade, cool iron on the reverse. Do not bleach or tumble dry.
Good to know Tufting is done by hand, so pile height and tassel fall shift a little between the two covers. They are a pair, not a print run.
The Story

The jaali was always about light — a screen that cools a room and prints the sun across the floor. Redrawn in tufted cotton, the diamonds trade one kind of shadow for a softer one: raised thread that catches lamplight in the evening and lies flat and pale by day. We made it a set of two because that is how the motif was always meant to work. A jaali is never a single opening; it is a rhythm, repeated. Set one at each end of a sofa and the room reads composed rather than decorated.

Set It
Across the sofa One cover at each end, so the tufting mirrors itself and the seat between stays clear.
Layered The two with the Chandni Macramé Cushion Cover between them — knots and tufts, one ivory story.
For the corner Chai within reach in the Saanjh Cups.
To gift A set of two is a complete housewarming in itself — it travels flat, needs no measuring, and lands well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many covers come in the set?
Two. The Jaali is sold only as a set of two matching 16 × 16 in covers, at one price for the pair.

Are the fillers included?
No — these are covers only, so you can use inserts you already own or replace tired fillers without buying new covers. Each has a concealed zip. Two 16 × 16 in (40 × 40 cm) inserts will fit.

Can I buy a single cover?
Not at present. The pair is how the motif reads best, and how the artisans tuft it — two covers to a run, so the pile height matches across both.

Will the two covers look identical?
Very close, not identical. Both are tufted by hand in the same run, so they share tone and scale, with small shifts in pile and tassel fall between them.

How do I wash a tufted cotton cover?
Gentle hand wash in cold water, reshape while damp, dry flat in the shade. No tumble drying — it distorts the tufting. A cool iron on the plain reverse tidies it.

What else pairs with the set?
The hand-knotted Chandni Macramé Cushion Cover shares the same ivory tone and adds a third texture. There is a full layering guide in how to style textured cushion covers.

Is a cushion cover the same as a cushion?
Not quite. A cushion is the cover plus the filling; this set is the covers on their own, so you can dress inserts you already own or buy two plain 16 × 16 in (40 × 40 cm) inserts separately.

Will this set work on a leather sofa?
Yes — the raised ivory tufting and corner tassels give a plain leather seat some texture to play against. It works just as well layered on fabric upholstery.

Wash & Care
  • Remove the inner filler and wash the cover only.
  • First wash cold and separately, hand-dyed and block-printed colour may release a little early on, then settles.
  • Gentle hand wash, or machine wash cold on a slow cycle with mild detergent. Do not bleach, wring or soak.
  • Dry in shade, turned inside out, direct sun fades natural colour.
  • Iron on medium heat on the reverse. Press embroidery and mirror work from the back only.
  • Inner fillers: air them out rather than wash; spot clean if needed.

Block printing and hand embroidery are done in small batches in Ahmedabad, slight unevenness in print or stitch is the mark of the hand that made it.
