The Riwaayat Morni earrings: a dark green fabric triangle block-printed with a red and yellow motif, finished with a row of antique-finish ghungroo bells along the base. Morni is the deep one: dark green with a warm red and yellow motif, rich against ivory and mustard. Light enough to forget you have them on.

The Story

Riwaayat means tradition, and specifically the kind carried by practice rather than written down. No block-printer learns the work from a manual. They learn by standing beside someone who already knows how hard to press, how wet the dye should be, and exactly where the next block has to land.

Against that we set the ghungroo, the small bell a Kathak dancer ties in rows at the ankle so that movement can be heard as well as seen. Each one is tied on by hand, one at a time. Put the two together and you get an object with two registers, a print you look at and a sound you catch when you turn your head. Handcrafted in Ahmedabad.

Wear It
Everyday With a cotton kurta or a handloom saree, for work and after.
With ivory With ivory or mustard, so the red and yellow motif glows.
Keep it plain Against a printed outfit these compete. Let the print on the ear be the only one in the room.

Are they heavy? No. They are fabric with small bells, not cast metal, so they are light enough for all day.

How do they close? With a stud and a push back.

What do dark green earrings go with? Ivory, mustard, maroon and black. The warm motif ties in with festive reds.

Can they get wet? No. Keep them away from water and perfume and wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
